OutsideIn Festival

It’s been a big year for both the Astral People and record label Yes Please so it seems rather fitting that the two should join forces to put on one of this years most interesting and exciting music festivals.  OutsideIn is now just around the corner, so in the lead up we’ve put together a little mix tape of some tunes from artists on the roster.  We also had a chat to Oliver Tank, who will be playing on the day.  Check it out, and remember there are still some tickets left to cop (here).

Here’s the mix, tracklist over on Soundcloud.

SBS: Well first of all how are you looking forward to OutsideIn, who are you keen to check out?

Oliver: Really looking forward to it, I’m keen to check out Thrupence, Flume, Smoke DZA, Shigeto, Africa Hitech, Cliques and the list goes on. There are so many great acts playing it should be a great day

We’ve noticed you’ve settled down on the gig front a bit lately, has this translated into some more studio time?

Yeah, I’m getting quite a bit done now. I was having a lot of trouble trying to write music earlier in the year. I was struggling to find inspiration and also just wasn’t happy with how a lot of the tracks were turning out. In the last couple of months things have become much more clear though. The gigs have settled down and I’ve had more time to think and reflect. I now have the clearest idea of where I’m heading with my music and I’m sort of glad its taken me most of this year because a lot has changed for me and I think it took me some time to realise that and reflect it in my music.

Airwaves is on again now in Iceland, which marks a big year for you. What have some of the highlights been, how has your live show progressed?

Yeah I was really happy with how the last year went. Ever since I won FBi’s Northern Lights comp to go to Iceland things have really taken off. Its been an amazing year with all the gigs I’ve played, the people I’ve met and the places my music has reached, I couldn’t have asked for anything more. Highlights would definitely include Iceland, going to the UK to do some shows, playing sold out shows around Australia and just all support I’ve received from everyone that really means a lot to me.

In hindsight it would have been nice to have had a bit more time to develop my live show, but it developed at its own pace and its certainly come a long way since i started. I used to play using Ableton and a midi controller but now I don’t play with a laptop at all which I think adds a real live dynamic to the show. I think the live show still needs to change and it will as I start working new songs into the set.

Finally, any collabs or new tracks coming soon that you’re allowed to tell us about?

I’m working on quite a few collabs with some of my favourite artists from all around Australia which I’m really excited about. I don’t want to give too much away, but they should all be on my next release hopefully. I’m also working on a Simon and Garfunkel cover which should be done soon. Fawn features a lot on that one and its sounding really cool so looking forward to putting that out.

Yew!

So Kendrick Lamar album is just as awesome as expected. Counting down the days till his show in Sydney!

Good review over on Complex.

Hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, brothers Ben and Louis Helliker-Hales are Chaos In the CBD.

A longstanding DJ/production duo, the brothers write and DJ emotionally sophisticated club music with an exuberant party edge. Working with motifs drawn from a historical continuum of house music which stretches back well into the eighties, the brothers fold influence abstracted from RnB, pop and beyond into the mix. Inspired by legendary figures like Todd Edwards, Moodymann, and Thomas Bangalter, they create slow burning beat ballads which pay homage to the timeless classics of dance.

Children of the late eighties and early nineties, Chaos In The CBD came of age in the thick of the internet era. Fluent in the coded vernacular of private message boards and social media channels, their artistry exists within a hyperlinked, hyper-networked world wide web of like minded music makers and DJs. More unified by taste and aesthetics than language or nationality, within the disparate-yet-connected bass archipelagos the brothers sail though, the physicality of the dance floor unites all.

Originally hailing from a band background, since making the transition into the electronic realm, Chaos In The CBD have been rewarded with enthused newspaper, magazine, website, radio coverage and DJ support, both at home and abroad. Alongside this has come a series of well loved releases through Youngunz (France), Southern Fried Records (London) and commissioned remix work for producers Canblaster, Kastle, Savage Skulls, French Fries and Manare.

Having been an established force on the New Zealand DJ circuit for several years now, in 2011, Chaos In The CBD headed to Europe to take part in their first tour of France. At present they are assembling new EP releases for Youngunz, ClekClekBoom (France) and Amadeus Records (Canada) and networking towards future northern hemisphere DJ appearances and releases.

We are stoked to have Chaos In The CBD over here as they are both heading to London in December for an indefinite period of time to further pursue their musical dreams.
